This order was issued in response to a resolution of urgent national urgency, supported by 88 members, regarding multiple backlash that had followed the nation’s signature on the international pact.

The Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, was urged by the House of Representatives on Tuesday to halt the implementation of the Samoa Agreement immediately until the contentious provisions are clarified and resolved.

This order was issued in response to a resolution of urgent national urgency, supported by 88 members, regarding multiple backlash that had followed the nation’s signature on the international pact.

It was discovered that on Tuesday, Representative Aliyu Madaki of the House brought attention to the section that emphasizes “gender equality” and characterizes it as a Trojan horse that could transgress national values.

The House also directed its pertinent committees to look into the contentious parts of the deal.

The Federal Government of Nigeria signed the Samoa Agreement with the European Union, although many people disapproved of what they believed to be the government’s endorsement of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) rights.

However, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) had previously stated that same-sex marriage is not recognized in Nigeria.

In a statement, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau emphasized that the deal does not require approval of LGBTQ rights in order for Nigeria to accept a $150 billion loan.

He emphasized that the agreement upholds Nigeria’s sovereignty and local laws, such as the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) Constitution and the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2023.

The NBA President claims that in order to preserve Nigeria’s sovereignty, they would have advocated against such provisions if the deal had required adoption of LGBT rights.

He restated that neither Nigeria’s sovereignty nor current laws were jeopardized by the Samoa deal.
