ABUJA:A bill that aims to establish three new states in the South-West area is scheduled for consideration by the House of Representatives.
The measure, sponsored by Mr. Oluwole Oke, the legislator for Osun State’s Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, has been scheduled for first reading in the House of Representatives.
The measure to create the states of Oke-Ogun, Ijebu, and Ife-Ijesa is being proposed by Oke, the chair of the House Committee on Judiciary.
“A Bill for an Act to amend the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended)” is the name of the proposed legislation. “The First Schedule, Part I of the Constitution is amended by introducing new states and reducing the number of Local Government Areas,” the amendment to the First Schedule, Part I of the Constitution declares.
According to the proposed bill, the local government areas of Ijebu East, Ijebu North East, Ijebu Ode, Ikenne, Odogbolu, Ogun Waterside, Remo North, and Sagamu will be included in the new state of Ijebu. Ijebu Ode is the suggested capital city of Ijebu State.
In contrast, Oke-Ogun State, which would have Iseyin as its capital, would be made up of 12 Local Government Areas, including Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iwajowa, Kajola, Olorunsogo, Irepo, Oorerelope, Ogbomosho North, Ogbomosho South, Saki-East, and Saki-West.
Eleven LGAs, including “Atakunmosa East, Atakunmosa West, Boluwaduro, Ife Central, Ife East, Ife North, and Ife South,” will comprise Ife Ijesa State.
Ilesa West, Ilesa East, Oboku, and Oriade are the others.
The legislator claims that the bill is cited as “The Federal Republic of Nigeria Constitution (Amendment Bill, 2024).”
If the law is approved, the North-West, which presently includes seven states, will be surpassed by the area. The North-West is currently the largest zone among the North-Central, North-East, South-West, South-South-South, and South-East zones.
