Following a coup in September 2021, a junta took control of the West African nation and imposed military rule.
The ECOWAS, the primary political and economic organization in the region, has been applying pressure to the junta—one of several in West Africa—to call elections as soon as possible and reinstate civilian authority.
In October 2022, the parties decided on a 24-month transition period.
Amara Camara, the secretary general of the president, abruptly declared on Monday that the administration had been dissolved.
In a pre-recorded video uploaded on the president’s social media accounts, he said that directors of cabinet, secretary generals, and their deputies would lead until a new government was constituted without giving any explanation for the decision.
The new government that is created will determine how the dissolution plays out.
