At the State House in Abuja,  Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently presiding over the 141st meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC).

The vice president, the governors of the 36 states that make up the federation, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the minister of finance, and other relevant parties are members of the council, a statutory organization tasked with advising the president on matters pertaining to the country’s economy.

For the meeting, a few state governors and deputies are seated. After three straight virtual sessions, the current meeting is the first to take place in person.

The council heard reports from sixteen state governors endorsing the creation of state police during its 140th meeting on March 21.

They also suggested amending the constitution to make establishment easier. Vice President Stanley Nkwocha’s spokeswoman had stated that NEC was still awaiting reports from 20 states, but she was certain that more states would back them.
